Well, I decided to check back in.

I realize that it’s been about 3 months since I posted anything. I have to admit that I have not stuck to my goal of keeping below 100 grams of carbs. Fortunately, my weight has not gone back up in response. I have keep it within a few pounds of where I was in the last post. At my last weigh in (on 8/16), I was sitting at 382.2 pounds.

There have been a few new things going on in life that need to be updated. About a month ago I decided to give in and get a handicap placard for my car. It definitely felt weird parking in that spot the first time! But I was having more and more difficulty walking even with my cane. I still have pain but the distance is shorter.

This led me to give in to my wife’s nudging me to see an orthopedic surgeon and see if there was anything that could be done for my hip. I have always dismissed the requests because the last surgeon I saw told me that due to my weight no surgeon would be willing to do any surgery. My dad had his knee replaced last month and liked his surgeon, so I set up an appointment.

He confirmed that my hip was bone on bone and that the head of my femur which should be round was now more oval in shape. He also said that he believed that he could successfully do a hip replacement on me! So now I’m looking at surgery sometime in early January. I am both excited and a little nervous!

So, I’m wanting to continue to shed the weight so that I am in a better place come surgery time. To that end I have come up with the following new set of goals for myself for the next 100+ days:

  • “Ketovore” eating style 25-50 grams of carbs per day
  • 16/8 Intermittent Fasting (7pm-11am)
  • Drink at least 85oz of water per day
  • Limit myself to 16oz of a “zero” soda per day
  • Walk 5000+ steps per day
  • Get at least 6.5 hours of sleep each night

I will also try to be more consistent with posting here (we’ll see how that goes).

I’m not so naive to think that this is going to be an easy, quick fix for my hip pain. I know that the recovery process after surgery will be rough. But I believe that on the other side of this I will be able to do more of the activities I haven’t been able to do for some time.

On with the next chapter of the adventure!
